How to eat

It’s common to eat without really noticing that we’re eating. We often do it alone, or mindlessly, our thoughts elsewhere. And we often do it too quickly; we’re in a hurry to get on to other things. We neglect to acknowledge the deep significance of what we feed our precious selves, and how we eat it. What it costs the earth to sustain us.

There are two reasons why eating the right way is vital for weight management. Eating without paying attention undermines our mental and physical health. It also tends to result in eating too quickly, leading to over-eating and poor digestion (particularly of carbs).

How to do it?

  • Enjoy what you eat – pay attention to food, and acknowledge its significance in your life.
  • Practise mindful eating as a technique to enjoy food more, and also to prevent over-eating.
  • Chew slowly and thoroughly, and allow time for your brain to tell you when you’ve had enough.
  • Keep a journal, at least for a little while, to help you understand more about your own eating habits. Learn how to keep a Food Diary here.
